I think a working group for legal stuff was put together today after the meeting. This is maybe the most important group of all!

I tried to attach the manual to this post but apparently it is too large. You can access the manual by clicking on the link "Legal Observer Manual" on the below page: www.nlg.org/resources/legal-observing/ I believe we agreed on purchasing bright green caps and writing "Legal Observer" on them since we won't have time to get official hats from NLG. We need to figure out some way to collect money for a fund to purchase the hats. I imagine that this group of people will be rotating in and out of the demonstration. We will need to establish one or two coordinators who act as a liaison between the legal observers and the lawyers. Let me know if anyone has any questions. -Ashley T.

I collected a total of $62 in order to get started on hats/t-shirts purchase. We agreed on the flourescent green for both. Tomorrow I'll see how many I can purchase at Hobby Lobby. So far 16 were planning to be a part of the legal observer team at least for a portion of their time (I have the list w/ contact info also). Some were going to get t-shirts on their own. Does Hobby Lobby have them? The web site does not list.

Quick question after reading the manual. Under the section "To Deploy, or not to Deploy" - it states:
Although some groups don't ask because they don't know we exist or just don't think about Legal Observers, other groups may not want witnesses on hand.
So if, for example, the civil disobedience group requests that they may not want witnesses at a certain event - but yet a Legal Observer happens, for whatever reason, to be in the area or even unknowingly come upon it - would it be our responsibility to NOT take notes or not submit them if becoming aware afterwards that our presence wasn't wanted by the activists?
Don't know if I'm phrasing this question clearly or not, sorry!... but can see that perhaps we might need an open communication system or a point person to work with that group if there are planned acts of civil disobedience and whether or not they would like us to be there.

Hey Rachael,
For slightly different reasons, but coming to the same conclusion, we thought there should be a point person on our team to communicate with the protest group. I was given that role after the meeting yesterday and the protestors picked a point person to communicate with us who I was able to exchange info with.

For those who may be interested. I picked up some supplies at walmart last night. Yeah criticize me later. $3.47 for the neon green tees in the craft dept. $39 for a 720 HD camcorder in the area with camera accessories and disposables, not the general display section. They even had an SD version for $25. I also picked up printable iron on transfers (7 sheets) for abt $10 and printable magnet sheets for $6 (3 sheets) these are good for vehicle signage i guess, not tested yet. Hope I don't end up littering. Harbison location, I know many of the newer stores don't have a craft dept.

Good to know.... I'm going to be sending out a group e-mail for those that were on our list to coordinate what we've gotten so far.
I went to Hobby Lobby and found t-shirts...but they weren't as cheap as that. $5.99 for XXL and $3.69 for XL child's (which would fit me but not most others). They didn't have any adult sizes except the XXL. I purchased two t's and two neon bandanas. I have $50 left from what I collected on Sun for more stuff. The walmart I visited next door to H Lobby didn't have any tshirts/hats in crafts.
Alex checked out the craft store nearby her and is working on hats--dying them green since no green there, but I'm ok w/ white hats also.

I just sent out a message to the list of e-mails I had collected, and Hillary responded w/ the cheapest t-shirt option yet: 2 for $5 at Michaels (Harbison). And cheap hats at walmart.
My plan for the rest of the money is: get 8 more t-shirts, 10 hats, and any remaining money buy green bandanas. After today I won't be able to do much until Friday 4:30 or so.
Other supplies we'll need: Clipboards? Paper? [with list of key points to remember based on legal manual] Cameras? I have three clipboards, and I'm willing to share/donate two of them. I'll bring my camera, but Steve also found cheap videocam at Walmart.
As for other planning: I know that Will Urquhart has agreed to coordinate between our group and the civil disob. group (or the protestors), but we should probably have others.
Learning the core of the L.O. manual: I'm not sure I'll have time to read it until Friday, but I'll try. If anyone wants to volunteer this role, to then dispense their knowledge, that'd be great.
[Hillary already volunteered]
I know that not all of us necessarily want to be Legal Os all day long, so we'll need to coordinate how we'll rotate. I'm willing to stay in that role most the day, however. I won't be able to spend the night, however.

I only got 2 of the tees. there were about 5 or 6 left of small medium and large, I think. I can go back and get more if need be. Just let me know the sizes and how many.
I also should have two 2-way radios with me on saturday. I can leave them with the group indefinitely.
I work m-f 7am-5pm so only can be there thru the weekend. If it goes well and others camp out during the week I can come and help out in the evenings, but will need to go home by abt 11pm. I'm a night owl on week ends so no problem for me on the night shift, just see if we can get an early riser around 5am sunday so i can get a cpl hrs sleep.
