I have a little graphics arts study behind me - but I'm no pro.
After attending the gathering Sunday (10/9/11), and then looking at the replies above, something struck me...
I recognize that the clinched fist is an age-old symbol of the people's uprising - power to the people, et al. I also note that, for the communication rules that we used, it is the symbol of "I have a question."
Is a quest for Power how we want to represent ourselves? Do we lead with a question? Do we want to use a symbol that has quite a history connected to it (Soviet Union, Black Panthers, et al.)
Instead of clinched fist - why not an Open Hand - a symbol of peace - and a symbol of our "Spirit Fingers" of agreement?
Just my 2 cents worth...

Do we want to use a symbol that has quite a history connected to it (Soviet Union, Black Panthers, et al.) Instead of clinched fist - why not an Open Hand - a symbol of peace - and a symbol of our "Spirit Fingers" of agreement? Just my 2 cents worth... Well those are good questions! First I would like to point out, the clinched fist is still widely used today. Being sort of the middle of the road of 39 years old, I am not that familiar with it's long term history. What I do know is I see it a lot in documentaries from the 80's to current. In each case it has been a revolt of the oppressed people of a government. I took it as a sign of standing firm and saying "Enough". It is also a common sign on the web, so I figured it would be quickly recognized. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the hand gesture (as to our group) of clinched fist "I want to speak" which could be a statement or a question? But this does bring to mind the two cliched fists with forearms crossed. "STOP STOP OR I AM LEAVING" I have not been appointed for this work, i feel immediacy is important to get something out there and have not seen anyone do anything in this realm until just an hour ago, yet just a modification of what i have done. By all means lets see more ideas!

I believe the clinch fist does come with certain connotations that might be detrimental to some folks. Ashley, who has post in this thread, is helping to organize graphics, private message her with ideas. Whatever ideas there are let's get them done quick so we can beginning canvasing ASAP! As in tomorrow; we only have one week to promote and we need student outreach immediately. As Ashley previously stated there are already made posters/fliers at www.occupytogether.org/downloadable-posters/ which can be modify to fit Occupy Columbia with some basic text editing. I personally feel this would be the quickest and most efficient method of creating and then canvasing fliers. -Travis

Here is a .pdf of a flyer we can start posting immediately! It's simple, easy to read, and I based it off of occupytogether.org's posters. Also I really like Paula Scher. Attachments:

Printing should be done with a .pdf but if you can't get it to work for whatever reason or need a smaller file size, this .jpg is good too! Attachments:

I have a connection with Velvetex, a printing company here in Columbia. I'm seeing if they'll be willing to donate a couple hundred sickers / buttons for our movement. It's nothing fancy, just a little something something to motivate peps. I have an example just can't figure out how to attach it. Basically its like the USC stickers, "Beat Clemson" but has the text "99 to one I occupy Columbia". If aproved, by Velvetex and you, I'd like to pass this out Saturday. I'll let you know if they are willing.

Anyone wanting to make and print their own signs at home but would like them larger than standard A4 might find this useful. homokaasu.org/rasterbator/wizard.gas?Phase=1I know, "The Rasterbator" sounds kind of smutty but I promise it's safe to click on

I'm a freelance graphic designer and a senior in the graphic design program here at USC. I would be more than happy to contribute my skills, access to software/hardware, and availability of printing to the group. Here is a poster I did for the occupation kickoff on Saturday. My email address is below. I plan on working on some more promotional material this week before saturday, possibly another poster or two. Please let me know how I can contribute. harpern@email.sc.edu
