John, you have a great system set up. I really like the idea of rotating through cameras. we will need someone behind a computer editing constantly and posting. We also need more people to be involved with shooting footage. I also really like your idea of working with the news to get raw footage. The ABC building is right across the st from the statehouse.

Here is the deal:
With solar chargers for laptops first a good one costs about $200 and probably a minimum 2 days to ship. No one in town carries them on the shelf that I know of, but maybe a hi end computer store. Then your looking at a higher price. These are only reliable for 1 or 2 laptops depending on size and age (efficiency). The good part is they go all day till the sun goes down.
With a power inverter attached to car batteries you can probably get on average 4-5 hrs per laptop/per battery. So just do the math on how many you think you need minimally. Then see if that is going to be a realistic number of batteries to tote around, ideally with a cart of some sort. but remember you will probably need that same amount charging up somewhere to be swapped out. Rigging up batteries in a parallel circuit is the method to extend the longevity of power. The more the better but a typical battery is what? 30lbs?
I think the best direction to look at is to see who has the most efficient yet capable laptop and a couple on the side for backup if something goes bad. That is till we can figure out some permanent source of power. Surely something can be worked out.
Small electronics like camcorders, cameras, cell phones are very minimal loads.
In the beginning I was under the assumption we would likely have some source of power to plug into even if we had to run a cpl of 100' cords.
Relying on batteries for hrs on end is going to be a real problem. For days? not even realistic, you will burn out the batteries with that fast a pace of draw down and recharge.
Damn that J.P. Morgan! He shut down Tesla's project for wireless electricity when Tesla was unable to provide a way to put a meter on it!

I just remembered Occupy Ashville said they where going to power everything using people power. I think they where talking about a small generator mounted to a bicycle. I will try to reach them and see what they are doing. I'm sure they are also using some sort of solar setup when the sun is out. Those people are in the know of such things.

I like the bike generator idea. Shouldn't be difficult to build. Ill search for some DIY instructions and post them ASAP

www.pedalpowergenerator.com/#FREENot difficult but expensive. anyone have any of these materials or something close? We could get a motor out of an old vac and use that for generating...

OK I picked up a 15 watt solar panel, 400 watt power inverter w USB charge port, materials to rig up 3 12v power sockets like you use for automobile phone chargers and the like. I will work on building a wheeled frame to function as a portable power center. We still need a minimum of 1 automotive battery, preferably 2. I will also bring a battery charger in hopes we find a place to plug in for recharging. The solar panel will not be anywhere near enough to handle peak loads. However it can slow down the discharge and function to recharge during any down time. Between those items and other OC related stuff I have spent about $300. So please someone find or buy a battery! If buying a new battery a deep cycle marine battery will perform better for this use. typically priced around $60 - $100 Attachments:
